Low frequencies, while controlled, are absolutely as chunky and imposing as they want to be, but that gentle caveat aside the Arcam's air of unquestionable authority shines through. The market's not short of little DACs ready to bring your digital music collection to life.

Also connected my old Adcom 5CD changer via coaxial out and my Sony DVPS9000es via DVD optical out. We can’t help but feel that the Arcam drags its heels a little, lacking the verve and sense of convincing enthusiasm to get us toe-tapping along quite so avidly. I'm aware the Arcam irDAC-II is a consumer DAC so may be pricey for what it is (IDK really?) but to my knowledge is well manufactured and has had mostly positive reviews. The measurements seemed decent in Stereophile's review so this has stopped me "upgrading" (that and I actually do like it for the most part).

I am encouraged by the fact that the writer of this article saw fit to hook up this next generation Arcam DAC directly to his power amp. I am seeing more DAC/headphone Amps that allow a more budget-constrained consumer a quicker path to separates. Keep making the hints. British outfit Arcam has been making outboard DACs since 1989, and the subject of this review, the airDAC, is one of their latest offerings in the category. With a price of only $699 USD, it’s also much easier on the pocketbook than most audiophile DACs.
